Need a therapist

About Me

I work as a psychotherapist, counsellor and group facilitator in both private practice and for a mental health charity. I began work in the field of mental health in 1994, using drama and roleplay to work with patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and psychosis. I began my training in psychodynamic counselling and then more recently undertook postgraduate studies in Existential and Person Centred Therapies. I have worked with a range of psychological and emotional problems, bereavement and relationship issues, and continue to work in the field of mental health as both a counsellor and group therapist.

My approach is to work outside of any labels or diagnoses, focusing on my clients’ world views and personal experiences, providing empathy and acceptance, with appropriate challenges and interventions once trust has been established. I am informed by theory and my work centres around the client’s particular way of being in the world.

Although the work is predominantly talk therapy, I sometimes draw upon my creative background to enable clients to work through areas that may be diffucult to talk about or where they are experiencing a block. I enjoy working with myth and metaphor, music and art, writing and story telling, and will try and facillitate the ways people feel most passionately about expressing themselves in the room. I also recognise the need for a quiet space where you can reflect, take time and learn about your true feelings in the silence.
I am an experienced group facilitator, speaker, lecturer and an active researcher, writer and workshop leader.

I am always open to the value of myth and symbols, in revealing meaning to us. In my work the myth of Sisyphus has become a motif, symbolising the courage and tenacity with which my clients face their life struggles.

He never gave up!
